photographic processes for pottery

Hello all:
I am a photographer and a potter! I would like to add photographs to my pottery. I want to use an emulsion (potassium or ammonium dichromate) that is mixed with pigment. I have found 2 books that touch on the subject, but they do not give the exact recipe for the process. I just do not know what kind of pigment to add and how much. I am willing to experiment, but I need to know where to begin.

I have been working with silk screening which is working well, but I want to see if the image is crisper with the dichromate process.

Has anyone worked with this process, or know where I can find info?

New to Dallas

Hi everyone!

I and my son have recently moved to Dallas and he is an amazing ceramic artist. I moved here because of a job transfer and he is going to the local community college and trying to meet people without a whole lot of success. Further, the ceramics class is mostly older(ie, moms and grandmothers) women so he's a bit discouraged. Does anyone have any suggestions of where he can meet other artists/clay/ fire folks in the area? ANY ideas are welcome!!! Thanks in advance!

reduced fireing

can anyone tell me if it is possible to do a reduction fire in an electric kiln. it seem like all you would have to do is block all the air ports and introduce wood or some other organic substances. would this damage the electric kiln? any advice would be helpful. thanks

I reallly want to make my own chiminiya!!! I am taking a ceramics class so i have access to a studio ect.... no one ive asked around the studio has ever made one though...
im sure there are some specifics to making these things....... what kind of clay body to withstand heat?? sizes...porportions..... how to make the chimney? the legs??? glaze?? cone 10, 4??it is all a mystery to me but im very determined! if you know anything about it please drop a line!!!!

Opening a studio

A friend owns a RV Park with cabins and camping has given me one of her cabins to open a studio. I'm looking for two electric wheels, a electric kiln, and a slab roller. If know of anyone selling these items, please contact me.
I have a wood kiln and have fired it 13 times. It's getting easier. All are invited to put their work in it.

pure glass dust.

so I got this buddy/family member. He works at a plant that manufacturers large glass sheets.
after I asked, he gave me some glass dust, similar to saw dust from wood.

has anyone played with this? do I need flux to make it melt? any experience with adding colorants and then dipping?

I plan to do this very soon, unless someone tells me that I am nuts and stop.

When I do my pots the clay has soo much grog that it is scuffing the nice furniture that it sits on. Sooo I was thinkin that I would cover the bottom with a porcelain slip that has no grog and probably some colorant.

I have the following recipe for slip:
Kaolin ------------------ 32
Potash Feldspar ---- 26
Ball Clay --------------- 19
Flint --------------------- 18
Borax -------------------- 5

before I screw up a shelf or two (note i dont use kiln wash) I propose these questions. (Thanks for answering in advance.)

What is wrong with this thinking?
If I apply this slip to my ware, do I apply it at the greenware (prior to bisque ∆010) or prior to glaze (∆5)?
Will it stick?
any ideas on how to test this without screwing up a shelf?

I am aware of putting things under the ware so it does not stick to the shelf (even though the proper name for that furniture triangle thing, evades me currently) is a possibility, but was hoping not to be required to do that.

under glaze

I just bought some Duncan under glaze and I just did a test with clear overglaze. The blue ran all over the place.

I was wondering if I fire the underglaze at cone 010 to kinda freeze it, then dip into clear cone 5 glaze wioll it still run?
Why did it run?
what did I do wrong?
Should I kill myself?

Alternative Energy for Small Pottery

I only share this space with one other person. Any ideas on what I would neat to outfit this space with? Anyone here done a similar thing with their studio? Hello beautiful potters & souls! I'm a young man on his journey in life. Definatly loving each and every second. I've been staying in Northern Cali living at a mineral springs resort and working there as well. I'm interested in massage therapy, pottery, alternative building, self-sustaining communities, tantra, inner alchemy, chi kung, tai chi, and just being a wandering saint hehe.
My job is running out this weekend and i'm waiting to feel the tug of the flow which way is next. I'm really being drawn to get back into pottery its something I love. I don't know how common it is to have an internship or apprenticeship who knows it may not every happen. But Infinate possibilities right???
I'm asking now for the flow of creation to hook me up with where I need to be next. I would love to work under someone who's likeminded, and and further my own evolution as well as their own. So if you have a place to stay, a position to offer, or wisdom to pass along please do.
I know whatever happening will be for my own good and that of the world, so we'll see.

oakland studios?

hello there. alas, sorrows. i miss clay. finding myself with this awkward chunk of time between work and an evening class in oakland, i wonder if there is a drop in/open kind of studio to be found. perhaps conveniently located somewhere between temescal and downtown. one with wheels, if you please. i was peeking at the crucible website and didn't see any open studio option.

alternatively...thinking about trying ruby's clay studio...since perhaps the drop in rate might be better than the monthly i never go often enough clay studio thing i was doing (too many) months ago. though i hear it gets kind of crowded there...any comments?

cone 5 porcelain?

i've been using this aardvark cone 5 porcelain for the past couple of years, as my kiln will fire no hotter. it's always been a pain in the aSS to throw, but it's what they carry at ceramics and crafts here in san francisco. i was picking up another box or two the other day and was told it had been reformulated, that the older stuff i had was defective. wow, defective clay. and the defect was that the stuff was spineless, it would just go mooosh on you when you started working.

so, now i have happy new aardvark cone 5 porcelain with backbone. anybody out there using anything other mid-fire 5 porcelains for throwing? i have heard a recommendation for kickwheel's swan porcelain, cone 6, which is sposed to be translucent when thin (the aardvark is definintely not, i've rolled out moby thin test tiles to find out).

A most fascinating book on Japanese ceramics..

So I found _The_Japanese_Pottery_Handbook_ by Penny Simpson in the stacks of SJSU today.

I've read it cover-to-cover already. It's a most unique book.

It's written in both japanese and english. And it goes through all of the details of how the Japanese do their pottery (including stuff like what all of the individual parts of the teabowl are called).

Makes me want to buy a copy of it and go on a trip to Japan.

hand sculpting: natural or trainable?

Man my favorite thing is to make little (4 inch high or so) busts, and I always start off wanting them to look nice, sweet, kind, but it's so hard to make faces look kind, and so easy to make them look ugly...

I quit trying awhile ago.. is it just practice to make the shapes come out how you see them in your mind? I mean, it must be possible to learn how to make it come out how you want, but it seems so hard... is it repetition or is there a way to learn faster, or...?

I don't mean to sound whiny, it's just that I keep trying to make happy pround strong faces, but I keep coming up short... I like the little faces I make, but I feel bad for them, they don't come out looking the way I want and it seems the more I focus in on the specifics of how they look, the worse they look! LOL

Maybe I just need to take another class, or maybe I'm not paying enough attention or something...? lol

...I just want them to look beautiful like they look in my head, but they always come out looking damaged... lol

I don't know maybe I'm just doing something wrong...? anybody have this kind of experience? :-)

shoot, i really think the little critter deserve better but i can't seem to bring them out...?!! lol sheesh!!!

i dunno... any help here?

Wood kiln in new Mexico

My name is Maqui. I want to invite you to my home for a wood-kiln firing. I plan on firin' the beast four times a year. It's way nice here in August and September. I'm at 7300 feet near the zuni pueblo. Camping is available. I ask $20 a day for food. I cook well. My goal is to bring back the rural community pottery.
This summer, I will be building a cob studio.

Handles

What is anyones favorite method for making handles???
I spent two hours today making two decent handles for a cup and a pitcher.
For heaven's sake. I think I should have used the extruder instead. They may look ordinary, but it's much faster.
Is it time better spent to learn to handbuild....do they ever look less than primitve?, or should I learn to pull them, or just stick to extruded?
What do you prefer?

Best tips for tool organization?

As a student, I have to cart my tools around to two different studios during the week.

I originally used a plasic art box. It had several sections that helped me to sort out tools, keeping sharps separate from the other tools for instance, but I began having trouble with MOLD.

The sponges wouldn't dry, and the wooden tools grew moldly. I ended up burning holes in the plastic to create some sort of ventilation.

This week, I decided to borrow an idea from another student, and I bought a canvas insert for a PAINT BUCKET. It has many, many pocket. Everything is easy to find.

I think I will cut down a plastic milk carton to use as a lift out carrier for my throwing tools. It can sit on top of the sponges in the center section. Just to hold a quick assortment of things I need when I throw.
The center section is big enough to hold clay as well, but the bucket might get kind of heavy.

It was inexpensive. The paint bucket cost me four dollars and the insert was twelve. Both from the hardware store.

I was a bit worried about sharp tools sticking out, but the pockets seem deep enough to prevent that. There are enough pockets on the inside for small or valuable tools, so you don't have to worry about losing anything. The outside pockets work well for ribs and stamps and green scrubby pads or sandpaper.

A Sharpie could be used to label the pockets to keep things in order too.

I would like to know how everyone else stores their tools?

I found two links to rolling carriers. I may end up buying one of those, if I can get over the idea of looking like a bag lady pushing my little wheeled conveyance around!
(Ooohh, my friend Jane is going to kill me when she reads this, and then tease me forever when I end up buying one!)
I guess I have to break my back a few more times, struggling to carry 25 pounds of clay and my tool bucket and my sketch pad and my Diet Coke at the same time, and then I won't care anymore. (Or balancing my beautiful hard won finished pieces in my arms all the way back to the car) Check these out.

mid-fire electric: feel my pain

i've been working with cone 5 porcelain lately. not because i'm dying to work at cone 5, but because my creaky old kiln doesn't get any hotter (does anyone go with mid-fire oxidation as an artistic choice?).

so many ugly glazes at that range. i'm finally getting some satisfaction from laguna's mid-fire lead-free line, especially their cone 5 satin texture line, mystic, and a couple of the satin glazes from their older moroccan sand line. anyone else in the same boat? what do you like?

i heard there was an article earlier this year in ceramics monthly about mid-fire oxidation glazes that look like wood-fired. wouldn't you know, that's the issue that got lost in the mail. is it worth back-ordering?
